Salmon-GAL is an alternative chromogenic substrate for ß-D-Galactosidase. Salmon-Gal is used in con-junction with Isopropyl-b-D-1-thiogalactoside (IPTG) (I1401) for detection of ß-galactosidase activity in -bacterial colonies in a colorimetric assay, in order to distinguish recombinants (white) from non-recombinants. Salmon-Gal is cleaved at the ß1-4 bond between galactose and the 5-Bro-mo-4- chloro-3-indo-lyl part of -X-Gal by ß-galactosidase via hydrolysis.
